The 4th Level

The 4th Level model of human thinking and behaviour and NLP

The question is does the '4th Level Model' help us to use NLP for the betterment of mankind
It is not about whether it is a 'provable' model but whether it makes enough sense to be useful

Distortion - Deletion - Generalisation

The three activities of the human brain as mentioned in the early NLP science

Distortion

Distortion is the unique ability for humans amongst the animal kingdom to be able to think creatively. It is about imagination that allows us to manipulate images inside our heads, and play with the ideas of feelings, tastes and smells.

Distortion - The engine of intellect

Intellect is the ability to take ideas and information and manipulate them in a variety of ways before taking action intellect is not about just the repetition of knowledge even if society usual thinks it is.

Through sensory acuity we can gather information which we then need to process if we are going to be able to achieve an outcome, make sense of actions, behaviours and events and then decide what action to take.

Areas of NLP science gathered together common elements of thinking and built 'models' around each. Each 'model' has what could be described as a 'mental processing engine' inside the brain. But be reminded that the brain is 7lbs of Semolina like material that processes information in ways that no scientist has been able to work out which is why we use analogies to things that we humans can understand to help us journey through the exploration of thinking. Some people just have minimal processing power in these engines, it is all they need to survive and survival is the primary function of the brain.

These engines are fairly easy to understand and talk about but that does not mean we have become cleverer just by knowing this knowledge. We can see this in the 'experts', the 'NLP Trainers' who perform and capture audiences but cannot perform basic rapport skills, cannot see unconscious cues and whose demeanour suggests they have 'stuff' going on that any good psychologist would flag up as 'needing some attention'.

How is it possible that we can make these claims?

However, there have been NLP trainings that have built into them the process whereby the engines become more effective, cleverer.

Sure, we have more information but an encyclopedia has even more but it cannot act upon the information.

Humans can

A chair is a chair, apples are food

We recognise chairs in their many forms and know that they will support our weight if we sit on them. Imagine having to test every apple before eating it; we would starve to death

Phobias and Allergies

A generalised response to a set of inputs that are innapropriate in modern life. The brain believes it is under threat of survival and produces the response it believes is most appropriate.

Social and cultural judgement

Deletion

Dieletion is the necessity for the brain to have to ignore most of the information that is available . Thias avoids overlaod and allows the brain to concentrate on what is useful. The brain also has the ability to bring immediate attention on anything that proposes a high risk to the survival of the animal in which the brain resides.

Generalisation

Generalisation is the ability of the brain to put together a set of attributes of an event or a thing and group them under a single label of understanding. Without this every situation would have to be tested anew to find out how to respond to it. Generalisation is about learning about TOTES - Test, Operate, Test, Exit

Why The 4th Level

Good NLP requires great sensory acuity and sensory acuity is nothing if what is observed cannot be categorised in order to be able to compare items and sort them usefully.

The 4th level was chosen to give a lable to this project. It does not suggest better or worse just a different group of humans.

The 3rd level are the 'Experts' in NLP. The founders and respected associates.

The 2nd level is all the trainers, coaches and therapists operating under the NLP banner.

The 1st level is all people who have come across NLP either as book readers, course participants or clients of NLP therapists or NLP coaches.
